MD, PA people driving to & from rally

Unread postby SANDU002 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 10:22 am

I plan to drive to the rally start point and will be driving back if the transport idea does not work out.

To Billings: Leave on Thursday before the rally with stops in (1)Toledo, Ohio (2)Lacrosse, Wisconsin,
(3) Rapid City, South Dakota arriving in Billings Sunday afternoon. Each of the three
stopping points are open to change. If anyone wants to join in along the way, we can
form a plan.

From Portland back home: I have no plan and no timeline, so open to anything except traveling thru
Kansas and Missouri. My navigator will be flying home from Portland, so will
be solo-ing it back to Md.

We will be driving out there also. But since we are super cheap, we will be staying at campground on the way there and back. Not really sure what the plan is, all I know is that I have to pick up one of my co-drivers at some airport along the way.

Not planning on doing any camping as the corvette doesn't have enough storage space and I have to stop in Sioux Falls, SD to pickup my navigator.

I'll be driving solo from central PA. I need to be in Billings on Saturday to pick up my navigator. I expect to leave from home Thursday 7/7. Maybe I'll run a direct route, but I'm also considering taking I-75 thru Michigan to the Upper Peninsula, then see some scenery along Lake Superior before catching I-94 to Billings.
After the rally we'll be doing some sight-seeing. Then I'll stop in San Francisco for a visit with family for a while.

Glen,

Sounds like you are going to be spending long days behind the wheel before the rally. I am taking a pretty direct route just to get to Sioux Falls by saturday noon. With a stop in Rapid City saturday night, each day is 9+ hours. I will look over your general plan and see if Thurs & Fri might allow us to hookup for part of the journey.

Maybe breakfast early Thursday near I-70 and I-76?
If I do the Upper Peninsula route I would break off to the north on I-280 or I-75 near Toledo. It adds a few hours to my drive but it should be interesting.

I'm driving out also but have no route picked out yet. Would like to meet up with other teams along the way, wherever that is.

Okay here is what I have:

Thurs 7/7: I take I-70 to I-76 Pa Tpk to I-75 near Toledo. To meet Glen at the first rest stop on I-76, leave at 7 am to meet 8:30 am - 9 am. Total drive time to Toledo area is just over 7 hrs, so there is time to visit any sights along way or continue further.

Fri 7/8: To get to the Lacrosse, Wi area is roughly 8 hrs via I-75 & I-90. Once again time to sightsee or continue further.

Sat 7/9: I want to be at the Sioux Falls, SD airport by noon to pickup Jeff and end up in Rapids City, SD that evening. Sunday morning plan to visit Mt. Rushmore and maybe another rally team there and arrive in Billings, Mt that afternoon. Straight shot I-90 all the way from Lacrosse to Billings.

I think this is a good plan to start, so let's hear your idea(s).

Tis better to travel in the company of friends!

I'll check with my navigator, Jeff. Maybe he can catch the same flight to Sioux Falls.

Great Bart. So far its you, me and Glen. I am not that familiar with the Pa turnpike stops, so maybe you or Glen can figure which one we meet up.

I'll have to check with Glen but I believe we have met at the Blue Mountain Rest Stop in the past. It's milepost 202.5 west bound. Not sure where you will be picking up the turnpike at.

The first turnpike stop west from Breezewood is the North Midway Service Plaza at milepost 147. It's about a 2 hour drive for me. I could be there at about 8 am.

BTW, it's handy to have a few in the group be able to communicate easily. I have a CB and FRS radios. These are really useful and inexpensive: https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MH230R-23-Mile-22-Channel-Two-Way/dp/B001UE6MIO/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1466184522&sr=1-3&keywords=frs+radio

Josh Hankins was interested in making the trip with us. You out there, Josh?

It is 4 hrs from Rapids City (Mt. Rushmore) to Billings. I think if we leave Mt. Rushmore by 11 am, we will be fine.

Dining options at the North Midway Service Plaza look to be pretty lame. Instead, how about breakfast at the Perkins in Breezewood at 8:30 am Thursday. There's also a Sheetz, Denny's, Bob Evans, Starbucks and a few other choices.

Perkins, 167 Post House Rd, Breezewood, PA 15533

I have a little over 2 hours drive to Breezwood. Then it's a little over 5 hours to Toledo.

Glen,

This is perfect for me. It is the same drive time for me, so I will see you there at 8:30. So far its you and me with Bart maybe leaving on Wednesday. I drove to Detroit last week to help a buddy pickup a car he bought and I-80 in Ohio had some construction, but it wasn't bad at all. I will post on facebook about our meeting point.

We are driving home to Monterey down the 1 on the coast on Saturday, you are welcome to drive with us to SF. We are not sure if we are going all the way in one day, or stopping in Crescent City for a night, depends on how beat we are.
