Anyone using "Waze" app ?

Unread post by carwash » Wed Jul 10, 2013 11:42 am

If you haven't heard of Waze yet, check it out....

It's a mapping/navigation software that is also community driven. You can report police locations, accidents, traffic etc, and it shows up for all other Waze users. Also, the stuff other Waze users submit shows up for you. For example, on your morning commute, you see cop on the side of the interstate, you can post up that position for the cop by just pressing a button. If traffic slows down, you can post that as well, and all users coming behind you will see it on their map as well. But, let's say a guy in front a you about 5 minutes posted up that he saw a cop hidden behind a road sign, that shows up on your map, and it just might warn you in time to save your ass from a ticket.

I thought it would be really cool if all the RNE users downloaded and used this app during the rally. It would work kinda like a transponder of sorts where we could all see where each other is, and scott could track us in a way as well. Might help us from getting nabbed by the po-po as well.

Just an idea... any thoughts?

Quite a few are using it so far, more would be cool.

It would be a really cool way to track each other during the rally, know when yer close to someone, etc...

If I were scott, I would almost want to require something like this, so that he can keep track a little bit of what is going on, etc...

App is free, everyone should sign up!

Yep. I'll be using it. But driving solo I'll probably only be lurking.

Just downloaded it. I'll try it out this week and see how it works.

Waze question? Not sure if I understand its use and potential. But from what I read above and understand, if everyone were using Waze, and all could see each others location and direction of travel in real time.... doesn't that detract from deciphering route card clues and plotting your own teams course?

In other words, all a user would have to do is follow the flow trend to each location with out figuring out the location for themselves. Thus a way for cars starting later to gain significantly on those that start up front because the ones off the line early are blazing a trail that could be followed via the tracking function.

Please correct me if Im wrong in my assumption.

Yeah... You are correct. I guess that would be no good... Never thought about that negative.

But you can really only see another wazer on the map if yer within a 1/4 to 1/2 mile of them. You can only see what shows up in your on screen map. No way to see a wazer 10 miles away.

I was thinking mainly for the "ThereS a cop right here" etc.

I don't see anything wrong in teams working together or traveling in a pack collectively deciphering clues... that's routine and one fun way to approach the rally.

My question was based on its potential impact on negating the advantage of starting up front.... I didn't know it only provided limited distance common user account tracking.

I tried this in 2011 with Klutch22.. and to be honest.. even though we have A LOT of time in a car.. I never used it because there was way too much else going on than trying to track where everyone was..

If you wanted to use an app for cops.. I am telling you the Escort Live App, with the smart cord.. is the shizz. If we had half of the field using this radar detector coupled with that app.. there would be zero tickets..

Also Trapster works too but I was never a fan.. Its a great concept but its only good on user base..

With Klutch22 we actually created the event :Rally Appalachia: and had about 60% of the field registered for the event.. and after the first 30 minutes.. I quit using it. The concept is great.. and I considered developing our own Rally North America App.. that would do the same thing. Plus A LOT more. (not going to get into too much.. but it would be a GREAT app for road rallying)

But I do believe a lot of the people don't want to be found as it gives away their position to the enemy.. (you) hahaha.

But yer right, there is a lot going on.

Now that I've been using it for over a month, nearly daily, I still like using it. There are a few improvements that I'd like to see but I plan to keep using it.

I've rocketed up to about the top quarter million of users pretty quickly, based on miles traveled. It's really helped me plan out the time it takes to do some regular routes and build in safety time for traffic.

I am not a huge fan of the map they use...Tiger I think it's called...I prefer the map Google uses. However, since Google bought Waze, I'm hoping there will be improvements to both.

I find the map doesn't zoom in quickly or early enough to allow for correct navigation at complex intersections...hello Ithica, NY, for example.

I like the social interaction but when there is a lot going on, it's difficult to find the attention needed to use Waze. If just cruising, it is easier to use all the other functions. While it clearly has your eyes off the road less than texting, Waze does have some driver attentiveness issues to address.

I also like the map editor function, which you can access online, via a laptop. You can see where you have driven and "unlock" map areas..,that is fun to see where I 've been and to plan routes to unlock more area...instant side road trip recommendations!!

I find Waze's in-system communications to be primitive and difficult to access while driving.

Anyone else still using it?

I am not using it as much as I did at first... It's a great app, but I don't like it for everyday driving.

I use Waze pretty often and don't disagree with most of those comments. I think the ability to see, post and confirm/deny road 'hazards' is great. But it has given me some weird routes as compared to the Garmin app on a phone.
Another big plus for Waze is that it really takes advantage of the big screen on an iPad, unlike the Garmin app.

I use it only on long roadtrips. (Highway)

Waze worked flawlessly all throughout NY/ME during the '13 RNA Rally.

If TJ uses some in-car footage he got, you'll see Waze in action.
