Serious question, serious answers please...

Unread post by daleclough » Mon Jul 09, 2012 8:23 pm

Happy after-party Rally DIXIE'ers!

Looking towards next year I will once again have the supreme navigator at my side. We already have tech and toys planned.

What we are looking at now is the most appropriate rally vehicle.

Budget is ~$15K and needs to be useful outside of the event.

Suggestions please and thank-you.

Dale

my answer is bias because its my plan too, but for those of us that live a bit more northern where we get the white fluffy stuff I say a WRX. its AWD for the winter, has 4 doors (which I assume you want for your recent family addition =) ) still a decently quick car and its Japenese so its reliable. 15k wont buy one off the showroom floor but it can sit you into a very respectable pre-owned one. just my input, very practical car that can still be thrashed on when you want to.

The T/A was a winning mixture this year....almost, Lol. Plenty of power with good gas mileage. It was enought to get us there with the quickest time on day 3, eventhough one of Alabama's finest gave us a manditory 15 minute break while he drank a coffee and clocked some traffic. With the red curse, I guess it's not a perfect car, so I'd say something like an STI or an EVO would be as good as anything for an all-seasons rally runner that has a decent mix of power, economy and enough room to squeeze a few people into.

This would be car #3, available to sit all winter if needed.

Does that impact suggestions?

Are you looking for something practical or fun? Appropriate can mean both...

Practical I'd say some kind of 2 door/hatchback type vehicle - http://www.motortrend.com/new_cars/02/hatchbacks/

Fun, this is wide open and everyone's taste is different so I can't really provide a good answer.

For me, I'd love to do the rally in my wife's Volvo C30, it's a great little car and would have handled everything we did just fine. It's above the 15k price tag for a new one but used C30's might fall in there.

C30 is an interesting choice. I'll add that to my research.

I just had a little spin in a CIVIC Si. That's a peppy little go kart too.

I have a 1998 Mustang Cobra Convertible with less than 44,000 miles for sale. If you are interested let me know and I will give you more details. It is in excellent condition and I am asking $12,500.

Some great suggestions, thank-you!

Let's just say I am pursuing a p/t gig at the local BMW/MINI dealer.

can't blame you, always wanted to get into an M powered car. that would actually be perfect for what your looking for if I may say so myself.
