the carnage

Unread post by 04DetroitLS » Mon May 24, 2010 12:28 am

for those that dont know, the Slopala (or Mr. potatohead as its most affectionately know as) had a minor issue on the way home
started out running rough, thought it was bad gas, then came the firey fire balls shooting out, and eventually came down to Scott almost crapping thinking it would burst into flames (TY AGAIN for the escort into the next town)

Found 2 minor issues, and one not so major, but PITA to fix

Minor
1. Vac lines were torches thanks to ricer backfire flames in engine bay
2. removing head, we cracked the #6 plug (ceramic) literally in HALF

Major PITA, Minor Issue
While administering flying lessons to B-Rad in slopala on back country road, the car must have bottomed out the header, putting too much pressure on the flex pipe and rupturing it. Keep in mine these are 4 yr old stainless headers. While feeling for the hole I felt the "webbing" on the flex was "coming unraveled". We had no idea how serious it was until we pulled the headers in the Motel parking lot

After working until ~midnight,

my genius navigator forgot he left the power inverts, laptops, and GPS all plugged into the car w/o it running, so we had to wait another hour for AAA to jump us (because shady night clerk didn't have a car-prob not a green card either.....)

On the road ~2am drove straight home....all 15hrs of it...

The good:
Car cruises fine, not @ the 28mpg i was seeing before, not too worried about that though

The bad:
The rear header is going to be a PITA to fix
anything from 3" of vac - boost misses horribly, so it takes forever to accelerate unless I go WOT, then it isn't bad (closed loop issue prob having to do w/ the O2 being so close to the opening of the break + little to no back pressure + a few other minor issues
Car needs new front and rear o2s, they were a little "lazy" before, Im assuming they're pretty much fouled out now, although according to the PCM/Aeroforce they are working better, only tripped the code once on the way home LOL

The Ugly:
The car MAY need a valve job depending on results of compression test after other issues are fixed - just b/c of how rich it was running for so long (header cracked on way to Tulsa)
Not too worried about any of this yet... Atleast it went rich and not lean right? LOL

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

thx for the kind words Kev, doucher.

Also, didn't leave anything accidentally plugged in, I had the laptop intentionally plugged in so we could diagnose the goddamn problem!

Thanks for all the concerns,
It's really NBD (although it was @ the time LOL), modded car + me driving = eventual failure of something somewhere... just wish it would've been in my garage LOL.

It's amazing how much you overlook/miss/dont think when you're on the spot like that. I went blank when trying to figure out wtf was going on, prob due most to stress/lack of sleep
